A Band You Should Have Heard Of

The Ettes, formed in 2004 in LA, but based in Nashville, are one of those bands that you kind of know the riffs but you've no idea who they are. Their music has been used in numerous television shows and films, but they are yet to gain the fame they truly do deserve. They are a trio with great musical and fashion sensibility, making them perfect for inclusion here. 'Red in Tooth and Claw' is a great song to clean your room to, sing in the shower, or just plain rock out with while you jump around your house, just click on the title to get straight to it! Enjoy:)

Ever Tried, Ever Failed. Try Again. Fail Again. Fail Better.

The title of this post is a quote by the profoundly wise Samuel Beckett, the subject of a new exhibition. For all lovers of literature, or of photography, this exhibition is a must. An aging Samuel Beckett as photographed by the up-and-coming John Minihan, while they were running in the same social circles in London and Paris. A famously private character, Beckett gave Minihan unprecedented access to photograph him with his friends and in his places of work. This exhibition is free and runs from April 14th to June 25th in the Alliance Francaise.

Musical Minimalism

I know I'm going a bit mad with the posts today, but it's my first day in the blogosphere and there's so many beautiful things I want to show you! 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' is one of my favourite songs of all time (is that really sad??) so when I found this minimalist version of the song on the the glorious StumbleUpon.com I knew I would have to share it with all my fellow aesthetes. Enjoy:)

A Master Re-Worked

Edouard Manet is one of my favourite artists, and his painting 'Olympia' changed the art world forever when it was unveiled in 1863. I'm also a huge fan of Modern Art, so when I saw this photograph by Yasumasa Morimura, entitled 'Portrait' from 1988-90, that both updated and paid homage to Manet, it instantly appealed to me. Morimura is both Olympia, and her maid servant (despite the fact Morimura is a man) in this photographic portrayal of flexible sexuality.

Post the First

I decided that the premiere post of this blog should be something beautiful in a form all aesthetes can appreciate, the joy of the perfectly crafted high heel. Both versatile and enduring, the appeal of the high heel- both as a sex icon of fashion and as our little friend that makes our bodies look better- is never-ending. This particular heel is from Topshop, and I marvel at how truly day-night this shoe is, as well as how it will suit any woman's (or brave man's)foot, and go with practically anything in one's wardrobe. This style of leather peep toe, sling back, cut-away sandal is a must-have for the summer.
